History and Purpose
Founded in 1996, the Institute of Health Economics (IHE) is a non-profit Alberta-based research organisation that performs health-services research, health economics and health technology assessment (HTA).
The IHE conducts economic modelling and macroeconomic analysis on a range of subjects, and benefits from an extensive network of researchers at the universities of Alberta and Calgary, as well as throughout the province, across Canada, and internationally.
Key Competencies
Health Economics
The Institute provides economic analysis at both the system level (in broad areas of health-sector management and significant disease burdens such as cancer and mental health) as well as economic evaluation of individual technologies and therapeutic interventions. The IHE studies health economics and policy in different systems and strategies to address social determinants of health. We examine health financing and the impact of incentives. Our Decision Analytic Modelling Unit promotes the use, understanding, and integration of advanced economic modelling techniques to inform health policy and practice.
Health Technology Assessment
IHE’s HTA Program conducts comparative assessments on a range of topics for the Government of Alberta and others, as well as working with national and international colleagues in improving methods and approaches in the field. The Institute operates as the Secretariat for Health Technology Assessment International (HTAi), runs the scientific secretariat for the HTAi Policy Forum, and is a member of the International Network of Agencies for Health Technology Assessment (INAHTA) and a technical member of the World Health Organization’s Health Evidence Network (WHO HEN).
Knowledge Transfer and Dissemination
IHE operates as a neutral convenor for health policy discussions on important policy issues for different health system stakeholders and this is becoming an increasingly important stream of IHE work. The Institute also uses a number of means to distribute, disseminate, and increase the impact of its work. These include traditional approaches such as publications in scientific journals, conference presentations, web-based communication, press releases, workshops, seminars, and other educational activities. Some special dissemination activities include: the Ambassador Program for knowledge transfer in Alberta, a Consensus Development Conference Program, and a book series published by Wiley Blackwell.
Decision Analytic Modelling
The IHE’s Decision Analytic Modelling Unit is a new and growing team of interdisciplinary researchers including health economists, biostatisticians, epidemiologists, and clinicians, dedicated to using decision analytic approaches to inform decisions relating to the allocation of health resources. The unit's primary aim is to promote the use, understanding, and integration of economic modeling techniques for healthcare professionals and organisations interested in the latest tools for informing health policy-making.
