History and Purpose

Founded in 1995, the Institute of Health Economics (IHE) is a not-for-profit Alberta-based research organization. Through multidisciplinary capabilities and a collaborative approach, the Institute helps governments, industry leaders, and healthcare organizations navigate uncertainty, make evidence-informed decisions, and shape the future of healthcare.

Key Competencies

The multidisciplinary team at IHE has key competencies in health economics and health technology assessment (HTA). The team includes health economists, biostatisticians, epidemiologists, mathematicians, and clinicians, and integrates sophisticated capabilities across economics, evidence synthesis, policy, and engagement to deliver clear, actionable evidence.

Economics, Data Analysis, and Modelling
IHE integrates economic analysis, data analytics, and modelling to support evidence-based decision-making across the health system and fosters scientific advancement. The IHE economists conduct rigorous evaluations—ranging from cost-of-illness studies, pharmacoeconomics, health services and policy research, to health financing and labor economics—to clarify value, forecast impacts, and guide efficient investments. The team’s advanced analytical capabilities including econometrics, biostatistics, spatial analytics, outcomes research, and predictive modelling turn complex health data into actionable insights. IHE’s modelling expertise helps stakeholders explore scenarios, assess interventions, and manage uncertainty across epidemiological, statistical, and economic domains, providing a solid foundation for strategic and sustainable health policy decisions.

Evidence Synthesis and Health Technology Assessment
IHE’s Evidence Synthesis team specializes in synthesizing evidence for healthcare decisions, bringing methodological rigour to every evidence challenge. From rapid reviews for urgent decisions to comprehensive systematic analyses, the Evidence Synthesis team executes evidence analysis across health conditions, technologies, interventions, and policies.

Policy and Engagement
IHE brings together policy expertise, structured stakeholder engagement methods, and strong connections across the health system to support evidence-informed decision-making. Drawing on experience advising ministries, IHE develops practical policy options that anticipate implementation challenges. IHE’s engagement frameworks foster productive dialogue and consensus among diverse participants, while long-standing relationships with policymakers, clinicians, patients, and industry leaders ensure balanced perspectives grounded in real-world health system knowledge.
