NHMRC CTC – NHMRC Clinical Trials Centre
– Professor John Simes, Director, NHMRC CTC
History and Structure
The NHMRC Clinical Trials Centre (CTC) is located at the University of Sydney, Australia. The CTC was established in 1998 to advance the conduct of clinical trials research and methodologies underpinning evidence-based healthcare. The CTC is a centre for academic excellence, making significant contributions to the methods development, conduct, interpretation, dissemination and implementation of evidence-based health care advice in Australia and internationally.
How the CTC Works
The CTC has conducted a wide variety of evidence appraisals over many years and is highly experienced in HTA methodologies. Examples of our previous work in evidence assessment include contracts with the Department of Health (DoH) to conduct evidence assessments for the Medical Services Advisory Committee (MSAC) from 1999 to the present. In the 14 years since the initial DoH contract, the CTC has undertaken a large number of assessments, including therapeutic and diagnostic intervention assessments, horizon scanning reports, decision analytic protocols and critiques of reimbursement submissions from industry. The CTC has also conducted health technology assessments for other areas of the Department of Health, including the Population Health Division, MBS Quality Framework, the Nationally Funded Centres Program, the Diagnostics Services Branch and the Assisted Reproductive Technologies Review Committee.
Staff within the CTC have extensive experience in the conduct of systematic reviews, health technology assessments and economic analyses. The CTC also has a history of contributing to the advancement of health technology assessment methods internationally. Numerous peer-reviewed academic papers based on HTA work have been published by the CTC, including a series of publications on diagnostic test evaluation that has contributed significantly to the field of test evaluation. Members of the team at the CTC have also played a role in the development and validation of the NHMRC guidelines and QUADAS quality assessment tool.
