Wendy Babidge

Associate Professor Babidge has a first class Honours in Biotechnology, a PhD from the University of Adelaide and a Graduate Diploma of Business. She is a member of the Australian Institute of Management and a Certified Practising Manager, as well as a member of the Australian Association for Quality in Health Care and the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Following a career as a research biochemist, Associate Professor Babidge moved into the area of health technology assessment. She set up the Australian Safety and Efficacy Register of New Interventional Procedures – Surgical (ASERNIP-S) program with Professor Guy Maddern in 1998 and has managed the team since then. In 2005 she was appointed Director of the Research, Audit and Academic Surgery Division of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. The Division oversees the evidence-based medicine program of ASERNIP-S, mortality audits and morbidity audits (National Breast Cancer Audit, Endovascular Repair of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Audit and Colorectal Cancer Audit), as well as the College Trainee Logbook and Scholarships programs and the Section of Academic Surgery. Currently research is being conducted at the College on the use of surgical simulation for skills training, funded ($5 million) by the Australian Department of Health and Ageing.

Associate Professor Babidge has attended INAHTA meetings since 2000 and has been part of the Impact of HTA – influence of rapid HTA Working Group. She has presented at many national and international conferences, with panel presentations at HTAi in Canmore, Canada (2003) and Adelaide, Australia (2006). Associate Professor Babidge was a member of the HTAi Conference Organising Committee in Adelaide. She has been invited to speak at a number of meetings nationally. Associate Professor Babidge has represented the College at a number of workshops, most recently on the topics of National Indicators in Healthcare and Health Technology Assessment Review. She has 42 peer-reviewed publications in international and national journals, with 26 relating to evidence-based medicine.

Wendy has been a member of the Board for the following terms: Director 2009; Chair 2010-2012 and 2012-2014; and now Past Chair 2014-2016.
